Quick question for the collective brain that is TGO: I recently picked up a ’96 F-body LT1 cam to stab in the LO3 for something to do. The cam had about 40K miles on it, and came with the LT1 lifters and springs. Would these be of any benefit to me on this application? I had planned on picking up some new springs, but if these would work… cash saved. I’ve been reading all the LT1 threads I can… and haven’t seen anything specific to the compatibility of the springs. BTW… stock swirl heads. Any info or points to the right source would be greatly appreciated.
Perhaps if I gave additional information about my immediate plans for this motor, that might help generate some feedback: Right now, it’s a stock LO3 with the exception of having ripped off the air cleaner assembly and replaced it with something better. I’ve got a new water pump on there along with fresh coolant sensors and stat. Not sure of the mileage on the motor, previous owner said that it had been “rebuilt” but unable to provide any details on what was done or how long ago. I’ve got tuning gear, and have been playing with VE and spark tables the past 6 months or so to get used to the process before I bolted anything else on. Now, my catback arrived yesterday and I hope to order my headers this weekend. I’ve picked up the LT1 camshaft; it came with the lifters and springs. I was planning on buying the Comp Cams 249-981-16 as recommended in the LT1 threads, but if these are usable…why not use them? In addition to the springs, I have a parts list of gaskets; timing set and valve seals that are needed when I do the cam swap. I’d like to do the full exhaust, cam swap, new plugs, wires, dizzy at once. I have an old Performer RPM sitting on a shelf, should I dust that off and elongate the bolt holes? I loose EGR, correct? Or is there a way to adapt that? Also planning on a compression test to get an idea of the bottom end’s condition. If it’s in good shape, maybe a set of 059 Vortec would be in order down the road. These should keep me satisfied while I attend to other aspects of the car. It’s a hobby car, which only gets my attention maybe once a week, so I’m not in a hurry. I’d just like to make sure I line up my pieces before I tear anything apart. So… that being stated, words of wisdom are welcome. Thanks, Troy
Hmmm… 43 reads… surely someone has an idea about the springs… that’s my main concern. I hope that it’s just an easy question that I may have overlooked the answer while doing research on this board. Thanks.
I must be blind… I don’t know how many countless times I’ve skimmed through the “ (LT1 cam digest (the ultimate one))LT1 cam digest (the ultimate one)”… right there on #2… not sure how I’ve missed these links all this time. Not a direct answer to my question, but enough convincing for me to go ahead and order fresh springs. I still have a little head scratching on the Performer RPM manifold… is there anyone who might share some of their experiences with one? Thanks, Troy
