Not so cold air! I needed to use a one inch plastic riser. Bought ebay. some in 3.5 inch and 2.00 inch height I recall. 3.5 would not clear my hood. The 2.0 inch plus riser did. well not really it is about .1250-.1875 too high. My glass hood has a buldge in it. I think bulge better than stock! I could not determine a place to mount for better cold air. Suggestions welcomed.
That's interesting, thanks for the insight. i definately need some kind of CAI for my formula.. is this the Spectre plenum p/n 9841?
JEGS says it's 3.5" tall and has a 4" single inlet.
I'll check the part number when I get home. I'm not sure how I am going to convert from 4" to 3" and span over the serpentine belt. I might have to put 3" exhaust pipe to couple between adapter and hose.
Also does anyone have a picture of how the IAT sensor is routed when mounted into the tpi/v6 camaro air box? I want the wiring to look close to stock and I'm not sure what angle was taken.
Sorry about the delay, the part number is 9841. I'm think that I can build a build a better system with: a 4" to 3" coupler; to abs plastic 3" tube; to 3" coupler; to tpi air box. I would have finished tonight, but Home Depot is on winter hours and closed at 9pm.
As long as your using a stock intake or a low rise carb intake, it will fit. With aftermarket intakes with high rise plenums, there is typically not enough clearance.
thanks for the p/n as well as your other suggestions and thoughts. that definitely sounds like something to look into. i'll be using a performer tbi so i'll check and measure the height compared to a stock intake, but i'm sure there's not much difference.

I managed to get an xtreme velocity carb hat to fit with the performer RPM and TBI adapter plate. Its close, but it clears. The hat I have is about 3.5" tall or so (I can measure later if need be). One thing you may need to do is use a bolt instead of a wingnut. I remember that being an issue that there was not enough room for a wingnut.
I dont have any pics, but I do have a video of the setup after I put my TKO in and re-installed the EFI. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gv7c-...eature=channel With the hat facing forward, there was enough room for a 3.5" MAF sensor and cone air filter. Tight fit, but it did clear the water neck. In the summer, I reinstalled teh TPI airbox to keep the incoming air temps within reason.
In the winter, you may want to run a cone air filter within the engine compartment to keep the temps up. TBI does not like extremly cold air. IIRC, the EBL has the blended CTS/IAT term to compensate for the changes in incoming air temp. It wont be perfect, but it can go a long way to helping correct the fueling when its cold out.
Going to open element in January actually reduced my throttle response and dropped my mileage from 24 mpg to 21 mpg. The only change I made was removing the TPI air box. This was throughout January this year with 10-20 degree temps outdoors. That is contradictory to expexcted results.
Was you original intent to use 3.5" tubing? I am just wondering why you went with the 4" spectre piece rather than the 3".
I want to do the same, but I do not think I can with a bird. My old formula had tpi, but it used the canister type filter. I really want to go ram air, but that is still kind of pricey for me.
yeah it's a nice setup! but as graebz mentioned, i don't think it can be done with a bird.

Yeah, but you could add a few 90s and run it to threw the battery tray on either side. I did that with my last TPI motor rather than using a bird TPI canister.

Well, I wanted to use tubing that would match well with the tpi box, so I chose 3". With these adapters, the path of the air looks to be relatively smooth as their is not many changes in diameter.
I remember reading somewhere on this site, that the tpi air box did not show to be a restriction until 320 - 350 hp. However, if anyone could put any flow data on it, that would be appreciated.

Yeah the hood. I guess those hoods are love/hate. Some love the 4th gen LT1 style, others the 98+ LS1 version, and some hate them both. I love the look of the 98 TAs with the RA hood, so I kind of want that look on my old bird. It does not look nearly as cool as the 4th gen, but I hate to own a car that I need to drop the motor from underneath.
