i have a 1988 t/a today i just switched my spark pluggs "made sure they are all in order." , and my oxygen sensor , i removed my air cleaver assembly , and just installed a new fuel pump relay , now , i try to start my car and it will start but at a very rough idle and my rpms jump from 800 to around 100 " it shakes up and down " , im having white smoke coming out from my exhaust and not burning fuel all the way and my carb is clicking i dont know why , anyone out there know whats wrong ? , btw my car ran just fine before all this the only thing i had before this was ignition problems until i installed a new fuel pump relay and ignition probles went away , now i have all this to deal with
I can help you up to where this could be a carb related problem. You should probably repost this in the carburetor section of these forums. This is TBI, Throttle Body Injection, specific section of the forum which is technically fuel injection. So repost in the carb section a couple of sections above this one.
Check your wires again, make sure they're all plugged in right, sounds like it could be a misfire so make sure the wires are all plugged on their according plugs and cap locations.
I don't think the fuel pump could be the culprit here, but you never know, so check the fuel pressure, it should be around 8 PSI maybe (Correct me anyone that knows) for a carbureted car.
That's about all I can help you with along with the info provided, it cannot be from the o2 sensor or air cleaner, they just wouldn't make that drastic of a difference if you didn't install them correctly.
I'm sticking with the spark plug wires being crossed somewhere, it sounds alot like a misfire with smoke coming out and fuel not being burnt.
thanks for the info , problem fixed , it was a loose spark plugg wire , btw i just went back to my old spark plugg wires , since the new ones were 7 mm and my old ones are 8mm so i will be getting 8mm wires instead "new ones" maybe msd , thank for the help .
