high idle and runs a little rich TBI help.

I have an 89 Camaro RS Coupe with a 305 TBI. Everything is stock. My problem is that Its seems to be running at a high idle and is running a little rich(smell from exhaust is pretty strong). What is the normal idle RPMs at temp supposed to be? I believe the lowest mine gets not in gear is about 7500rpms. Thats the LOWEST. Seems like it is supposed to be a little lower than that. What could be making it run rich and how would i adjust it or get it back right? I'm not the smartest guy on cars but i know a little. I have recently changed the fuel pump, fuel pump relay, and fuel filter. All just to find out that the ECM was bad after about 3 weeks of troubleshooting. I also gave it a tune-up recently(oil, filter, distributor, wires, rotor, etc). Unfortunately i live in the great state of GA and have to get this car to pass emissions which is gonna be damn near impossible with this car. This car was a wiring mess when i got this car and have recently been trying to get everything right. Fuel pump relay was bypassed, had a 3rd party fan relay and temp gauge. Push button start and a bunch more. All i have left to do before i try and take it to emissions testing is to try and get the fuel flow right and get my fan working right(thats another post) Any help would really be appreciated.

Re: high idle and runs a little rich TBI help.

Well today i ran it to test the fan switch circuit and it wouldnt idle below 10k RPMs. Please help. I don't know what to do. I'm thinking it might have something to do with the TPS? maybe? I'm clueless when it comes to the fuel system in this car.

your RPM numbers are way off.. 7500?! 10k? where in gods name are you getting these readings? more like 750. these cars in auto should run around 900 rpms at idle.

Have you eliminated any and all vacume leaks?

Re: high idle and runs a little rich TBI help.

Yes all vacume lines are correct. And yes i meant 1000, not 10k, and 750, not 7500. I wasnt thinking straight.

So 900 is normal. I guess mine is running at normal rpms. Thanks for that info. It just seemed a little high.

As for the running rich part. Any idea on what causes it or how to adjust it? Or how to test?

Re: high idle and runs a little rich TBI help.

hey ! i have the same problem too , my car runs rich at idle and i get white smoke out of my tail pies and nasty 91 octane gas fumes " gives me a head ache after idleing the car for a good while " anyways , to "tune " your throttle body unit you will need star sockets , on the left side of the tb unit there is a small start bolt , mess with it , but be carefull , and take into consideration what effects it will have on your ecm , my mistake was that after a headgasket repair i wanted my fan to stay on all the time , so i by-passed my coolant fan switch and my engines performance went to crap " although it stayed cool" , so my guess is that my ecm is thinking that my engine is warming up so it stays in enrichment mode and im getting a coolant temp sensor code " i was ignoring that code " so prettymuch by making the ecm think its still in enrichment mode , it floods my tb unit , so will be reseting evrything back to stock and hopefully evrything works out , i too have smog testing next week !!! hope the info helped
