Re: choke??

Nope, no choke. All electronically controlled by the ECU and the IAC (idle air control valve). Is there a foil-ish tube running from the driver side exhaust manifold heat shield to the bottom of the air cleaner assembly? My TBI motor sits at 1100 or so and comes down, but also heats to normal pretty easily.

Your not throwing a code for like the coolant temperature sensor or anything are you? Cause that completely confused my car because it didn't know when it was cold.

Re: choke??

Well you would have to check under your hood, that foil-ish tube i was speaking of is for your cold starts and it pulled hot air from the manifold up to the air cleaner to heat the motor up quicker. If that is missing, then you are pulling air from the engine bay, which between driving and if the day is cold enough, would take 10 minutes to get hot air moving into the engine to heat it up. That would be the first thing i'd check for.

As far as the coolant temperature sensor or idle air control valve being defective, you would notice other difficulties in driving the car, among the check engine light being on.

Re: choke??

The line is connected there and per temperature as far as i understand, when it's cold it opens the valve, and when warm closes it so that it gets the cold air from the front and not the exhaust manifold. It connects to the TBI unit underneath, i think it's the top middle vacuum port on the front of the unit, but it's been a while since i've been under there. I wanna say there should be a vacuum diagram underneath the hood somewhere, but i'm not sure. But yes, there should be a vacuum line running from one of the vacuum lines on the TBI unit underneath to that valve in the air cleaner assembly to control the valve inside.

Re: choke??

hmm well the FIRST thing to check is thermostat. dont over think this problem. see if (when you first start the car on cold engine) you can squeeze the upper radiator hose and feel coolant flow. if thats not it, then yeah dig deeper and try the other suggestions people posted. but thats a dead give away on what to check first when your car doesnt heat up fast enough
