Re: tbi air intakes?

I guess I can see your point of view as to the hot air but cant get past the amount of cold air being puled buy the TBI through the rear cowl opening .As it is now the top filter almost makes as seal with the under side opening of the cowl.If you put your hand next to the rear opening of the cowl it gust flat out pulls hard against the rear screen. You can really hear it pulling to.I can imagine how hard it would pull if I ever place a air box around the 3 by 14 filter sealing the hole unit to the cowl.I really think the car breathes better with the set-up I have. All I need now is headers to match my 3in. exhaust and I'm set.If it was not for the cowl I would run some sort of Ram Air set- up.

Thats not how it works when your driving,,,the higher the speed the more veloctity will be pulled OUT of that cowl opening...... those rear opening cowl hoods are ment to suck air ( THE HOT AIR ) out ! not in !!!!!!

I would bet ya, @ 80-100 MPH u are starving your motor for air,,,u just don't realy feel it.

On a dyno, it may show positive, on a dyno in a wind tunel u would be supriced !

Think about it !!!!!!

PS.: wind tunnel tests have shown this many times !

Plus, all the belt wear is getting sucked right on to the filter and other engine debrey u don't see .

Re: tbi air intakes?

WoW that really busts my bubble. Thought the 1st gen. Camaros really had something going on when GM first came out with the Cowl.Im not saying your wrong but this is what I was told buy a member here. Acording to GM.The hood is fed by the positive pressure created at the base of the windshield. The 'hood' system starts to become effective around 35+ MPH by providing good clean but more importantly, cooler air. Cowl induction systems work well if put together properly. Usually there is a air box that fits under and around the air filter assembly and seals to the hood when closed. That isolates the air filter from the hot engine air and allowing the carb or TBI to pull air while the cowl opening pushes cold air . Thats the idea.

I know, that is the idea...but sadly enough ...it doesn't work that way !!!!!
The low pressure air on the bottom of the windshield gets sucked away faster from the stream air force on the side and top of the windshield rather then from the suction of the engine.
That's why on newer style cars the cowl hood has openings on the side/ and or top, pointing to the filter ..to allow air to get sucked tru and the filter can take as much as the engine needs. Or of coarse the RAM air hood which needs to have a air outlet on the back or it will act like a parachute.

Also if u stick more air in ,,u need to up crate your jets, other wise the fuel mix is not accurate and the HP will actually drop instead of rising.

The best jets i find is the ones from the cop cars !!!!!

Re: tbi air intakes?

I/ we have turned this thread into a discussion about cowl induction. I suggest starting a new tread because this is a important subject not only to me but to anyone running a cowl hood with a open element. Buy the way I certainly appreciate any info.on the subject as to make a educated decision as to whether or not my thoughts/opinions on how and or if cowl induction actually works.

Re: tbi air intakes?

After 4500rpm, were the engine would eventually suck more air then the stock air cleaner can flow, the LO3 heads and cam dont make any power.
