Backfiring...Due to being too lean?

okay,i know this is going to sound dumb...okay so now that you are prepared here it is, a while back i built a mild 350, installed it in my 91 bird in place of the LO3. i used the stock manifolds, AIR, y-pipe and cat...today i installed headman shorties, y-pipe and no cat. now the car pops and gets a pretty consistant backfire which stalls it. so thinking it was a timing issue due to more flow and not being tuned (ordering my ebl this week RBOB) needless to say, my attempts at adjusting the timing didnt help for more than 5 min. i am using a 350 tbi with the ultimate tbi mod done, the ecu...well we will just say thats the stupid part, its the original LO3...im just shocked that the car changed sooo drastically with just a header setup. is there anyway you can think to fix this until i get an EBL and learn what it does? im 9.5 comp, xe 268 cam if that matters at all? thx
