Originally posted by Gunny Highway Everybody is talking about 3.4X's gears.....what about 3.27's??? I'm looking for a good pick me up, but I'm very concerned about daily drivablity.
My buddy who runs 3.73s says that with an OD tranny (i.e. 700R4) the increase in RPMs on the freeway is only a couple 100 RPM. It would still be streetable.
I lost a lot of my streetability with the 3.73's... its a big change from 2.73's. I suppose that I could have messed something up, but I really don't think so. I would increase all of the rpm's by a third, that would give you an idea...
I'm pretty blind right now, so I'm sure that I'll read this in the morning and probably correct myself...
I just put one in my car. I left the gearing alone for now. I'm in a trade union near Chicago so it's not unlikely that in 6 months I may have a job that puts 120 miles a day on my car.
Anyway, the PowerTrax is what I would say to be "serious sh!t" I never took into consideration that it's not a 'limited slip' rear end. It's kinda like a Detroit locker, without the air. The teeth are always locked, except when going through a turn. The difference in torque being applied to each wheel throught a turn is what unlocks the posi. But give it a little too much throttle and the inside tire chirps. It does this because it's trying to spin as fast as the outside wheel.
I've only had it in about 2 days now and I am slowly learning how to throttle out of turns to help avoid that. I'm sure I'll get the hang of it.
And I have tested it out. It takes a lot to get the tires to spin at all now with the 2.73, but I did get it to. It was weird riding out a 150' fishtail in my LO3, auto trans RS

where did u get your powertrax no slip from? I just called summit and they said they don't make them for the 7.5/7.625 10 bolts anymore????
the guys at power trax are telling me that there is a differance between the 7.5" and 7.625".....I think mine is 7.625" it's an 88 camaro w/2.73 and 26 spline axles.
Your car, if it's the original stuff, has 7.625 gears and 26 spline axles. Powertrax part number 1932 for the performance locker(from their website). 92-0776-2605 for the no-slip system. I got the performance locker way back when they first came out. I'd reccomend it to anybody that wants some serious traction.

Spohn LCAs and LCA relocator brackets will make a world of a difference.

OX locker is better. Air lockers are a big pain in the butt. My friend blew the ARB up in his truck. Cost a lot to fix: New gears, new locker(non air locker), plus labor......$$$$
I understand what you're saying. People just have to remember that they're not really made to run locked in street conditions. IMO it's like trying to run a spool as far as the everyday driving is concerned. Just run it open then when it's race time, lock it up.
I'm going to change my gears and rear end (I THINK). I was planning on going to a slp take-off posi with 3.73s but since i have a 1988 SC i would need 28 spline axles - correct? How much would the new axles cost - assuming I did the job myself. Also - with a 355 TBI set up with a cam for 2,000-6,000 rpm with an aftermarket intake, 670cfm holley unit, and head mods - would i be able to pull 3.73s through the entire 1/4 mile? Gearing is new to me lest you couldn't tell...
