I posted the same topic on a different site, and would appear the general consensus is that on a motor over 50k miles is:

1. 95% Valve stem seals worn.
2. 3% over rich at start up.
3. 2% Coolant leak?

p.s. My amateur expression of the posts received.

I have mine booked into the shop tomorrow for a full top end gasket replacement. I don't have a major smoke issue, it's just a bit embarassing leaving a cruise having parked up all day, with that smoke following me for about five minutes!!

I have the same issue, and it's valve guides.

My solution: a new set of AFR 190 heads.

And if ya don't believe me, I fixed a broken cat with a set of SLP headers, 2 catco cats and a 3" Flowmaster catback last month. I really need to stop going for broke though, I'm going broke.

Valve Stem seals are easy to fix. I did mine with some nylon chord and some box-end wrenches. Took a couple of hours and I had never done it before nor had I ever worked on one of these cars before.

Serious, a socketset, some box end wrenches and large washers and nylon chord.

...last time I checked valve seals made a puff of *BLUE smoke. A puff of white smoke would be water in the form of steam. I have been told that this is the classic symtom of a pinhole leak in the head gasket. It is hard to detect when the leak is small though. What to check for though would be excessive air in your radiator. (bubbles!) maybe even a little oil in the radiator defending on how old/how well your rings are sealing...If the leak is too small though you probably wont see anything. When the car shuts off, so does the cylinder pressures. If the leak is at a cylinder that is at low pressure when the car stops, the high pressure coolant system (~15-19 lbs) will spray into the cylinder until pressures equalize (usually not very much makes its way in....then when it starts, you get that nice white puff. I'm not saying that irt can't be anything else, but I am saying that anyone who knows anything knows that oil burns blue. Too much fuel generally burns black, water (coolant) boils to steam and is white.

it does it in the morning only, and all that smoke i dont think is condensation...it might be the cold start injector though?? could that be a possibility...and its around 50-60 up here nowadays..not that cold

does it have a smell? the heat from your engine is alot hotter so it could make condenstation from 50-60 degree weather.

if its bluish white then you're burning oil. Just a little puff on startup really isnt worth worrying about. but its probably the valve stems.

you can fix it now if you're a perfectionist...but its not the end of the world.
