Timing???? advance or retard???

I know this may be a overheating problem, but Im thinking it has to do with the timing. Ever since I installed my open filter element and headers with a less restricted exhaust, I've noticed that my engine would overheat. I never had that problem before installing the mods. Now that my engine is breathing better, do I have to compensate with either advancing or retarding my timing. Its on 0 degree TBC now (stock)....

Not sure what engine you have (year, induction type would be nice to know). But, advancing the base timing usually helps it run better. Try in 2 degree increments, starting at about 4 degrees, and back it off if it starts pinging while driving.

I've had the same problem on my 350 tbi. Ever since I put on headers its been running too hot 230-240. I've raised the fuel pressure but it didnt do much. Did the timing solve your problem?

I have a 91 305 TBI and the manual says the correct timing is at 0 TDC (plus it also says that on the plate thing under the hood). My car also used to run hot but I found out it was because of a small intake manifold leak. I replaced the gasket and thermostat and did a complete tune-up and now, my car runs cool and great.
