My custom "tricked out" intake

My import buddy found that most cars stock intake dont bring in much air, so what he did is hook up a dryer tube to his intake and ran it out through his front air dam. He explaned how much better his car performed so I decided to try his theory out. So off to home depot we went, and less than 10 dollars and 5 min later, suprisingly, I actually noticed a difference. (for the better)

cool.
that pipe doesn't really do much though since your major bottleneck is right at the cleaner base.
your right they don't allow much air in. when I switched to my 350, the stock 305 cleaner was choking my engine so much it would barely run!

i hope your going to raise it some b4 the rains

there have been many a car that suckedup water from a low airintake. Can you say bent rods?

If it really works you should be able to put in much higher and still get a low pressure area. If anything, your probably at a high pressure area now.

Marc, I'm glad you got a kick out of it, but you laughter isn't helping me. I just had an idea and went with it. I thought that was what this was all about. I also though I could post it on thirdgen and not get laughed at, cuz most of the people on here aren’t jerks. If I didn’t agree with something on your car I wouldn’t laugh at you. You could at least tell me why you think it's a bad idea. After all it was just a friend and I having a good time.

I was posting to see if anyone has done anything similar or had any improvements I could make. I am gonna cut the tube a bit tomorrow, I hadn’t thought about rain.

First off, get that inlet up off the road, you are inviting disaster if you get caught in a downpour, and, believe it or not the air down that close to the road is quite hot and not where you want to draw from. Think about how hot the pavement gets when the sun beats down on it all day, now how hot will the air be just 6" from it?

geez you need to stop hanging out with the import guys before they give you some more bad ideas. A buddy of mine has a GTS celica (2001 i think) anyways he was talking about his new cold air intake and how hard it was to install. Anyways I was like yeah check out my new intake. Raised the hood and showed him the edelbrock intake. I said "I told you what i called an intake isnt what you call an intake " Took me awhile to convice him that i actually put it on .

I am seriously thinking about the open element, but I was wondering one thing. Sure it gets more air, but that’s some hot air. I guess a lot of hot air is better than a little cold air.

Morley, Thanks for the input, I totally agree w/ you. I’m going to find a way to snake it over to where the fog lights are supposed to be.

And just so everyone is clear on this. It's only a temporary experiment I felt like doing until I get the open element. My import friend said his worked, and I said prove it.

IMHO, It's a really nice 3rd gen, in good shape.... etc..

It seems a real shame to do anything that's even remotely ghetto to it.

10 years from now, when you no longer own the car, and some poor kid gets it... he's going to wonder what the hell the original owner was thinking when all these hoses are bypassed, no EGR or vacuum hoses connected.. etc...

It's your car, do what you want to it. That said, duct tape doesn't look good, nor does striped dryer tubing. Posting pictures of duct taped mods will just make people laugh and call you ghetto. If you really like the idea of putting an intake near the air dam, go to home depot and buy a piece of plastic that looks like your stock intake. You can easily find some black plastic tubing to mount and connect it. It'd be better to put a filter on the end so that it doesn't suck up water and other crap.

Oh yeah one more thing. "Tricked out" and third gen don't go well together.

You will notice a bigger difference from an open element than from what you got there. Sure it sucks hot air but it is also unrestricted. Trust me it helps.

Will the 14x3 open element fit under my hood. I'm just making sure. I'll prob order it tomarrow. Thats why I dont care how the dryer hose thing looks now, it will be gone soon.

I knew the pics would be funny, like I said it only took a couple min. and a couple dollars. we were just experimenting. When i put on the open element you wont see any duct tape, trust me.
