I've set the timing on many cars, but on my LG4 I have the "magnetic timing probe hole" timing pointer. Haynes/Chilton states u need 'special equipment" to time the car. Before I try to use my "regular timing light", can someone maybe explain the procedure, if there is a special procedure???

There's no special procedure I know of, never heard of a "magnetic timing probe" either... interesting concept though
You just look down at the timing mark with a timing light that's triggered off of #1 or #6. The mark includes a little metal tube that you can see by looking down along the front of the timing cover behind the water pump.

I have the same thing on my 1986 port-injected 2.8 V6- does your balancer have multiple notches in it too? I -think- whatever this magnetic probe was, it could "see" a cut in the metal- aka, a balancer mark. The triple-balancer-marks stopped in 1987 for the 2.8/3.1 V6's. I never looked, but I wonder if the magnetic probe tube is gone too!
