$500 cam/head install pretty good?
how good is $500 for a mechanic to put in new heads cam and intake? i would think thats pretty darn good right? i dont wanna get any crap about how i am not doing the work myself and saving the money. i was planning on doing the cam myself but my friend talked to this guy and he said he would do it for that and do the heads, so i was thinking about it.

Well, that's about an eight hour job. $500 divided by 8 = $62.50 per hour. I think you could find a mechanic who works out of his garage who would do it for more like $30/hr. That would be $250 for the job.

That may be true... on the other hand, do you want your engine work choice made solely by who's the low bidder?
I'd be more concerned with the quality of work this person does. At that price, it has better be a job where you close the hood and drive off, and you can't tell it's been worked on except it runs better. No leaks, no rigging, no cut wires, every wire and hose laid back neatly where it came from, every hose hooked to the right fitting, every soft or wear part that needs reneal replaced (belts, hoses, etc.) etc. etc. If you get that level of work, it's not a bad deal. If you get a $200 job but have to pay $500 for it, you're getting screwed.

$500 seems like a decent deal if you got the $. Like RB said, the quality of work is very important in this situation. So don't cheap out on it.
I know when I had my gears installed the guy charged me $150 which I thought was a deal, but he does excellent work. Most say Richmond gears whine, but not mine.
