Yeah, was it thru the intake or exhaust?

intake might be a timing issue, or running lean.
exhaust, may be due to severe exhaust leak.

Also, check the conditions of your plug wires.

I really have no clue when it comes to carbs but I'll give it a shot. Sounds like the accleration enrichment (Pumpshot on the carb). I don't know much about the needles, valves, and floats on carbs but I know there is something for the Pumpshot on them...

check your basic stuff first.

like mark said, check your plug wires, and make sure they are all on the plugs.

Definitely start with the basics. One of those would be the distributor cap: make sure there are no arc tracks inside it from one plug wire terminal to another.

If all that is good, then pull the valve covers off, and check for broken rocker arms and other valve train problems.

Check the valve train. If the problem is there, it should be obvious. Broken rocker, broken push rod, broken stud, nut backed off, all of those things on the exhaust; or a broken valve spring on an intake.

If it's not that, it's a head gasket.

As far as the root cause, I don't know.... you'd be a better judge of that

had the exact same problem, only it happened to me on the whitestone bridge at 1:00 am!! A rocker stud on an exhaust valve broke on my brand new AFR heads. The stud was a chinese piece of crap ( you don't get much for 1700 bucks!) I replaced them all with ARP.

i would guess #5 exhaust, its firing back thru the intake and blowing fuel out of the intake.
