shimming a posi - Third Generation F-Body Message Boards

How big of deal is it to shim a posi? I already have the SLP take-off posi installed and I like it and all, but the shop did not shim it up tight enough. How hard is it to shim up. The shop charged me $90 to install the posi gears and new bearings, what do you think they will charge to shim it up WAY tight?

What do you mean its not tight enough? How'd you figure that?

If its not whining, and you dont have preload, backlash or clearance specs to prove it isnt installed right, leave it alone.

ok, ok, ok. i have just "heard' that shimming a posi tighter will cause it to act more like a spool and less like a open differential...

That works on the various clutch-type posi units, but you have to take them apart (the carrier that is) and put shims behind the clutch packs or the springs, to tighten them up. But yours isn't a clutch type, so it doesn't apply anyway. There's nothing to shim.
