I have an 87 iroc hence the name and well the gear box is leaking oil it only leaks when my car is driving i guess. There is oil all up in the space of the body between the driveshaft and where the gear box meet? Could someone tell me how to fix this problem? thx

I have a second question.....does n e one know how to remove the center peice that has the accessories in the roof of the ttoped irocs. My snake bulb light is blown and i dont no how to take remove the console from the ceiling of the car without wrecking the ceiling thx!

Sounds like you have a pinion seal leaking..or if you are lucky differential gasket...which you can change yourself. the pinion seal you will need a shop to replace..not to much cash outlay maybe 200-300 bucks...either way..you had better do something or you will be buying a new rearend..which is big bucks...later/

If fluid is all down the tunnel, it is probably the rear seal on the trans.

so your rear end/differential is leaking correct? not the transmission? if it's the rear it could be the cover gasket or the pinion seal which is at the front and goes in the hole where the driveshaft goes in. the cover gasket is easy to replace, just unbolt it, clean the old gasket off, put new gasket on, bolt back on and fill with fluid. if you have a posi then you need to add posi additive. if it's the pinion seal leaking then it's quite a bit more work. do a search for "pinion seal" and you'll find some good instructions on doing it, or you can always take it to the shop.

if its in the tunnel i agree its coming from the tranny, what color is the fluid...

if its the rear end somehow then that will be alittle easier to fix.. either a pinion seal or the cover gasket..

Quick question. Have you checked the fluid levels and see if any are low or even over full? If the tranny is over full it will dump fluid out of the vent on top of it just something to check for.

yeah, if it's all the way down the tunnel then its the rear tranny seal.

A pinion seal leak is pretty obvious, you'll get oil splattered everywhere around the pinion seal area.

I wouldnt think it costs a whole lot to replace either one. I do it all the time at work, just remove the driveshaft, rip out the old tranny seal and pound the new one in. About 15 minutes maybe.

A pinion seal is more like 20 minutes. Just take out the shaft, buzz off the pinion nut with an impact, mark everything's location, rip out the old seal, pound new one in and reinstall.

Funny, i never bothered to see how much my bosses charge for that. At a gm dealership....200, 300 bucks might be about right. I mean this is a place that charges $8 a quart for mobil 1 synthetic and $11 for a 30 second brake check...
