can a bad o2 sensor cause backfire?

My car has been backfiring lately when I let off the gas. Today I replaced the plugs, distributor cap, rotor, ignition module and fuel filter. I regained most of my power but the car still backfires after high rpms when I let off teh gas. It seems to be running lean when I step on the gas and get rich when I let off. Could the o2 sensor be bad?

Are you getting an engine fault light?

It sounds more like the distributer is wearing out. Get a timing light and check if the timing is wandering around instead of staying constant in the same place when the engine is at a steady rpm.
