First of all wanted to say hello, it's been a few years since I have posted here, but for any old timer that remembers me, HELLO!
I also want to apologize for the length of the message, it's a long story and I need help!
Approximately a year ago, I began to smell gasoline for 2-3 days (Depending on how many miles I drove) after filling the car up. I had some other issues with the car and had not gotten around to having a mechanic do a pressure test on it. About 6 months ago I ran across a recall that was reported by GM in 1994.
Defect Summary:
THE FUEL FILLER NECK SOLDER JOINT CAN DEVELOP CRACKS OR PIN HOLE LEAKS, WHICH DOES NOT COMPLY WITH FMVSS NO. 301, "FUEL SYSTEM INTEGRITY." THE CRACKS AND HOLES CAN ALLOW FUEL VAPOR AND FUEL LEAKAGE.
This effected all Camaros and Firebirds from 1991-1992, effecting a total of 232,988 vehicles.
I took my car in to a local Chevrolet dealership to have it looked at. They told me that I do have a gas leak and it is in the filler neck, which requires the entire gas tank to be replaced. The service writer proceeds to tell me that there was NO recall on my car for the gas tank. I found out from the mechanic that diagnosed the gas leak, that there was IN FACT a recall on my car, but it was cancelled.
I call Chevrolets customer service that afternoon; they can’t even find a recall on the gas tank for ANY Camaro. They promise a call back the following business day. After two business days pass, I call them, wondering what is going on. I got an EXTREMELY rude lady telling me there was no recall on my car, THEN she tells me how recalls work and that their random, yadda yadda. Not even letting me talk. So when I finally told her to look up the recall by the number, she “said” she looked it up and couldn’t find it, but repeats that there are no recalls on my car….period.
The recall is listed on the NHTSA website (Campaign ID #: 94V077000) and listed on ALL Data (TSB#: 92C36). I pulled a carfax report; they don’t have GM recall information. I cannot find a single place where I can type in my Vin and get the recall info. NHTSA can’t even give me that information.
So I am driving around with a leaky gas tank. Anybody have any suggestions on what to do?
it had TWO recalls actually, the gas tank filler neck AND the transmission cable going from the automatic shifter to the tranny, .....possible problems? it breaking and you NOT knowing your car is still in drive when you put it into park!. LAW SUIT for GM ....id seriously screw gm over if i were you and had the money to get a lawyer.....thats plain bs ......
The above is very informative. I believe I have many of these ailments with my 91 TA. My question is what does the number at the end mean ? example :
Water pump/seal leaks 1987-88 (88-265-6B).
What does (88-265-6B) mean ? Is that a recall number ? I have had very similiar results as aimeesc has in his post regarding comments for the dealership.
Does anybody have any ideas on how to proceed to get this problems fixed ?
i was in a similar situation a few months ago when i took my car in for the defective seat belt buckle recall. the dealer couldn't find any recall info with my vin so i called gm customer service, they couldnt find any info either but i gave them the campaign number and the lady ran it through the archive department and was able to find the campaign info. a week later i had new buckles. everyone i talked to at customer service was very helpful and very friendly. so if the customer service people are being rude request to speak to a supervisor and tell them the story. i would imagine that the leaking tank is a 'safety recall' in which case it does not expire, which is why i was able to get my buckles replaced ten years after the campaign was issued.

Dealerships can run the vin to check on whether recalls have been done to your car. If you know of a recall and your dealership won't help...go to a different dealership.
I have a Pontiac mechanic friend who does my stuff. It was pretty cool to get a new shift cable 10 years after the car was built for free.

Hmmm. I had a similar problem with a "recall" on the seatbelts in my beretta. They periodically lock up. 3 stealerships told me there was no recall. Maybe i'll try the cust service number.

Whoa, I didn't know there was a recall on that cable from the shifter to the tranny, that same cable just busted on me a few months ago and I replaced it. I could see it was really poorly designed when I put the new one in. How did they fix it, because the replacement cable I got was exactly the same as the orig. and I wouldn't be surprised if it breaks again.
Just wanted to say thanks to all of you that responded. I called back customer service today and spoke with the origional guy I placed the question with. He said that he did find the recall and it was on a per vin basis. My car was not included in that recall list. Here is their story:
GM received various shipments of gastanks on the manufacturing line. Some of the shipments (not all) were poorly made gas tanks. They know which shipments had these gastanks, so they can narrow it down, by vin, which cars were on the manufacturing line during these poorly made gas tank installs. Only thing that seems strange to me is that manufacture recall end date was 8/92, my car's man date was 4/92, I guess my car was lucky enough to have a good shippment?
So looks like I have two options.
1) Spend $500 at my friends shop.
or
2) Spend $700 at the dealership crossing my fingers that by tearing it out, I can whine enough where they can show me if it was something due to wear and tear or if it was a faulty tank. If it was wear and tear, I eat $200 more than if I took it to my friends shop.
So whoa is me. I spend time debating on what to do. Maybe someday I will get to put money in mods instead of maintenance.
have you considered doing the work yourself? it wouldn't be too hard. you have to disconnect your brakes and driveshaft to drop the axle and then remove the exhaust to get at the tank straps. i havent done it so i dont know all the intricacies but do a search or post on the topic.

I have thought about doing this myself a little bit. But currently I don't have a garage to do this in. It would have to be done outside in the driveway, which is sloped. Being as this car is my everyday driver, it would have to be done over a weekends time. I haven't looked in the repair manual to see if they have instructions on install. I think you make a good point though, maybe I should at least consider it, and see what I can come up with.
Here's the list of every Technical Bulletin listed on GM's Service Information program: ( I have seen the filler neck recall listed on here and now it's gone. It's been removed...i don't know why, but it's completely erased. Only thing I can think of is that GM might cancel a recall after ~10 years. *shrug*)
