What dose the service engine light mean?

Yeah, thats pretty much my question. Is it smart enought to know if there is some problem or is it just an idiot light telling me to change the oil? I dunno, I just changed the oil and then I noticed it come on, and its been coming on and off again for seemingly no reason. Any ideas? (I don't know if it was there before the oil change)

The SES lights primary function is to advise the driver that a fault has been detected in the car, and in most cases, a code has been stored. If a fault occurs intermittently, such as a loose conector pin breaking contact as the vehicle hits a bump, the ECM will note the fault as it occurs and energize the SES light. if the problem self-corrects, the light will go out after 10 seconds but a code will remain stored in the ECM memory. You can check which fault set your light by using a paper clip stuck in the ALDL port. The port is found under the steering column. stick one end of the paper clip in the top right terminal and the other end in the one to the left of it. Do this while the car is off. Now turn the key to the ON position. Do not start car. The SES light will blink a code 12(1 blink, pause 2 blinks). it will do this 3 times. after that any codes stored will then blink. example, 3 blinks pause 4 blinks means a code 34. each code blinks 3 times. you know when its done when it blinks a code 12 3 times. Now this is where you will need a repair manual. This can be found at any parts store. Find the code in the book and read it. Sorry for breaking this down barney style but I sense your a new member and just getting started with your car. if you dont have this book by the way, let me know what code you came up with and I will tell you what it says in the book..

Bottled Z covered it, but you don't need a repair manual. That's what this site is for. You can decode the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) here: GM OBD-I Error Codes.pdf. You'll need Adobe Acrobat reader to open/view/print the file.

EDIT: Incidentally, how did the overheating thing work out?

Well its not my camaro, and I'm not used to older cars so its all kind of new to me. Thanks for the help you have given to me, this really is an excelent group.
As for the heating issue, I've gotten all the stuff I need I just need to find out how to properly dispose of the coolant. I tested the coolant and it was so horriblely old, it barely registered on the scale, so yeah, once I've flushed the system it should be running again.

Thanks again,
Peter
