the '85 ECM is the older, 160 baud "870" computer that was used. In '86 they went to the 8192 baud "165" ECM, which is 51 times faster in collecting and transmitting diagnostic data. I just had my old 870 replaced with a 165 ECM and a custom burned prom. There are about 10 repinnings and a couple splices that are required, but the fact that I no longer had to use that god awful Burnoff module was enough for me to scrape up the money for the right parts. Does anyone know for sure? I've checked about 50 sites looking and all they say is the older computers were slow 160 baou while the new 'puters are really fast at 8192.

John the "165" computer is definately 8192 baud. I know from experience... trust me. I just had one put in my car. Your best bet would be to do the same. There are some repinnings that need to take place with which I had a lot of help but the swap was DEFINATELY worth it. Could be that the ECM is 8192... My site info is taken from an internally published GM document, not from experience. It is a table of byte codes that I published before any of this data became general knowledge on the internet. I haven't updated it since, nor have many people offered feedback on the accuracy of the info.
