Goodwrench engine 12513151

Tell me a little about this engine please; cam specs, and cylinder head opinions appreciated.

Overall, would this be a good engine to upgrade to from a Tuned Port 305? I have a ZZ3/4 cam ready to put into it if I needed to.

This engine goes for about $1500 from SDPC. Worth it?

JP,

If this is the L05 engine, it's a fairly plain-Jane 350. .385"/.403", 184°/194°, 114 LSA roller cam, but a decent 9.8:1 static compression and 195 HP - 295 lb/ft torque out of the box. Given the respectable compression, a better cam would be an improvement. The iron heads are no real asset, either. Equipped with 1.94/1.60 valves and fairly small port volumes, they probably flow about the same as a pair of stock L98 heads, maybe just a tad worse. One-piece rear main, center-bolt covers, self-aligning rockers, and all the things you'd expect on the last version of the SBC Gen I engine.

This engine will probably be a big improvement over the LB9, and the price for a NEW engine with gauranty is hard to beat. You could easily spend that much on rebuilding a bone-yard 350 to get it to the same point. If you know of someone looking for a pair brand-new of 350 heads, you could actually make a little cash back. If you don't have better heads to install on the engine, there are several ways to massage another 30-50 HP out of the stock castings with the ZZ3 cam profile. For an extra $250.00, you can go with the screwed studs, larger valve spring seats, and larger valves and deep-ported bowls, then machine in from the intake side to improve flow. Of course, some of this would be done by you, unless you're willing to spend $500-600 on head work.

If it's not the L05, never mind...

Vader,

This is the LO5 engine. I found this info on the SDPC website:

"350 / 5.7L GM Goodwrench Engine
Applications:
1992-93 (L05)Caprice, Fleetwood (except 9C1 police)"

You said that I could get anywhere from 30 to 50 extra horsepower from this engine and my cam.....Will the fact that it will be fed by a TPI setup up the power output any?

I would be happy to get ~250hp from the engine with a full exhaust. Can that level be achieved with the stock heads?

Your thoughts appreciated!
Thank you!

Send a message via AIM to vortecfcar
250 hp is possible with just the cam and headers, A decent TPI setup will be fine.

Would 250 hp be possible with a TBI bored to
48mm, 65# injectors an intake and headers?

When you guys say 250 hp do you mean net or gross? this is confusing the hell out of me.
For instance, the 350 vortec crate engine is supposed to be 330 HP. Is that net or gross? I have read that the caprice engine is rated at 210 to 220 net? Could someone clear this up??
thanks....bob

Nearly every engine is rated net, as far as I know. I am not an expert, but according to myth your TBI will not be able to support the power level of the 330hp vortec headed crate motor.

Incase you are wondering why I am shooting for such a low power level, its because I plan to use nitrous on this motor. I am looking for low 14s, high 13s on motor, and high 12s with a 150hp nitrous hit. Any feedback? I plan to use a 3.23 rear
