engine knock after going up hill???

I have a question that doesnt pertain to only third gens. I am a MP in the U.S. Marines, and whenever I stand at post one at least 1 out of 10 cars that come through get engine knock after I let them in. They travel about 1 mile up a pretty steep hill to get to the base. It doesnt really happen to new cars, but not just beaters. Is there a reason for this or just all crappy cars?

I spent a good part of my summer painting a house on a hill, and was totally AMAZED at how many cars pinged up the hill. I would guess that 7 out of 10 did it. This included all sorts of new cars! Saturns, toyotas, ect. They all pinged. It seemed that the only ones that didn't ping were the more powerful cars that didn't need to floor it to get up the hill. I never thought I'd hear so many new, computer controlled cars ping. Massachusetts gas is reformulated, and I think that was a big part of the problem.
