Actually, there might be two 1/2" pipe plugs in each head, so you could have several places to install the aftermarket sensing element. As Ed mentioned, the temperature sensor in the left (drivers' side) head is used exclusively for the dash instrument. The one that reports to the ECM for fuel/spark control should be located in the front of the coolant crossover in the intake manifold. Once you eliminate the factory instruments, the one in the left head will be useless. If you intend to keep both the factory instruments AND your aftermarket replacements, you'll have to use one of the other head openings for the sensor, or tap the water outlet as Ed suggests.
