92 Formula, 5.0, TPI, hypertech PROM and thermostat, automatic.
Was going about 65 on the highway, pushed the pedal down to get her to downshift (ok, ok, racing a *****) and as soon as I did, the motor started to die, RPMs started to fall. I'd let off the throttle and it would hold, or at least stop decreasing so quickly. As soon as I'd give it a little gas, it'd start to die again.
Pulled over and put it in neutral. Thought it would stall, but it didn't. Sat for 4 or 5 minutes then pulled back onto the road and it ran ok the rest of the way home, thought I didn't open it up again.
Only thing I've changed recently is adding a K&N filter, but I can't imagine that causing this.
Not sure what to make of it. Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Sounds like the fuel filter may be getting plugged-up.
To test it, pull the fuel filter off, drain the fuel out, wipe it off good, and try to blow thru it. You should be able to blow thru it very easily.
If it's been 20K miles or more since it was replaced, it's due for replacement anyway.
Either that or the fuel pump to the fuel regulator. Hm, yet that would probably also be followed by a bad sequence of pinging and or knocking from the lack of gas.
If it still acts up after that and you catch it when it's doing it...get yourself a fuel pressure gauge and hook it up and watch what it does when you rev the engine. That way you can eliminate fuel delivery as the cause.
