what is meant by "drop-base" air cleaner?

someone commented negatively about those and im just wondering what it is...

One that the base is actually lower than the top of the TB or Carb...

Not sure why there would be negative comments...I recall years ago Moroso had a 7 HP increase using their dropped based vs. a regular one.

Besides, I think that all the TBI and Carb'ed F-bodiy's use a dropped base aircleaner for clearance purposes anyways.

A 3 inch drop base air cleaner will perform worse that a regular 3 inch air cleaner. Because the air has to go up and then back down into the carb/tbi. However, you aren't going to fit a regular 3 inch air cleaner on a thrid-gen with a stock hood.
