stripped crank snout?!? - Third Generation F-Body Message Boards

Well i screwed up pretty bad tonight. im camming my motor, and it was getting dark, so before i stopped for the night i figured i would get the harmonic balencer off. the puller i rented didn't come with instructions (not that you really need any) but on the end of the center bolt(the one that pushes against the crank snout) i didn't put the little attachment on. so as i was cranking on it, the end of that bolt stripped the first couple of threads of the crank snout, and now i can't thread the crank pulley bolt back in. it almost wants to thread, but no dice.

so my question is, it's not that big of a deal to chase the treads is it?

just a tap and die set?

someone please assure me i don't need to tear down my motor.

It's no big deal just re-thread the bad spots and if your real worried just add some blue lock tite when you re-install the bolt.

thanks, i feel better now. I knew that was the case, but with my luck lately, i was preparing for the worst.

when i was threading in the center bolt, it felt like it was going fine, and then the balencer turned with it....

and i knew right then what i had done. then after a slew of obscenities i calmed down and told myself it could be tapped

seems liek everyone and their brother does that the first time they use puller on the dampner. run a tap in and chease the threads and you'll be fine. you have a lot of thread in it and only damaged the first few.
