400HP L98

Would it be easy or hard to get 400HP out of an L98? What would it take?

New cam obviously, SuperRam intake manifold maybe...

Saint,

Build it for RPM with a flat torque curve, and you can get over 400 HP easily. I've got a 355 that does 423 HP on the dyno at 5,800 RPM, and it only has .477 net valve lifts and hydraulic lifters, and IRON heads. This is a two-bolt block with added four-bolt caps on the center mains, stock stroke, 5.7" rods, slightly domed pistons (10.8:1) and 2.02" valves. It uses a (yuck) Holley and Edelbrock Performer. No special parts that you can't buy from any of dozens of places. I'm sure the RWHP is more in the range of 350-375, but I find it adequate.

A TPI engine might have a little harder time making power at those levels because of the fuel delivery/RPM limits of the induction system. A SuperRam would likely address that fairly well, but you'll have some ECM issues to contend with.

I'll bet there are quite a few naturally aspirated 400+ HP L98s around here somewhere...

Well, I was going to use a SuperRam base intake manifold.

I'm not sure if I'll have enough money for the plenum and runners...

Should I just go with a carbureted engine? I havn't purchased anything yet.

Go carbed... welcome to the darkside!

Edelbrock heads, Compcams XE262H-10, 9.5:1 cr, Holley 750vac carb, Performer manifold, 4-bolt main, etc..

And it passes the sniffer!

With the electronic Q-jet, I got close to 27 mpg on the way home from VA when it was cold outside (lower then 60F) and about 25 mpg comming from Charlotte when it was 90+F outside.

So yes, it does pass quite a few gas stations during the week + between fill ups...

Biochem, you got any dyno/guesstimate hp/torque numbers on your combo???

Vader, just to check: You have performer manifold, not RPM, right? what cam/lifter combo are you using, names please. Also, what heads and what have been done to them...

Just doin' a little research for next carb motor: Vortec heads (to be STOCK ports), springs, studs/guideplates, XE262 from COMP or HOT cam, either one to be run with 1.6 Roller rockers, possible Edelbrock 750cfm vac sec carb, RPM Air GAp manifold, GM HEI ignition. Looking for clean/easy/reliable 400hp on the dyno, that's all.

Any ideas?
