Fuel Pump

ok.. it's time to replace my fuel pump, but i realy don't have the equipment necessary to do it safely.. only 2 jackstands and a floor jack.. so.. basicaly, how much would it cost for a mechanic to install one?

Also.. i'm having thoughts about switching to an external fuel pump.. are there any ways to do that with the old pump still in the tank?

Last I checked, 4 years ago, they wanted $300 for labor, and $100 for parts. I heard that, and replaced mine myself! You don't need too many special tools for the job. Off the top of my head,

-Haynes 82-92 Camaro manual (covers the job)
-wheel chocks to block the front wheels
-good socket set (Sears, $40)
-1/2-inch-drive, 21mm socket
-3/8-inch-drive, 19mm socket
-22", 1/2-inch-drive breaker bar
-1/2-inch-drive torque wrench
-time, patience, pliers, screwdrivers, beer, wd-40, other small stuff

It's not "technically hard", it's just a lot of annoying work. Make sure you do the job outside so the gas fumes don't collect in your garage, and follow all other common sense safety laws!

Yeah, it's not that hard. It just takes some time. Me and a buddy of mine did it in my front yard and it took us about 4 hours. That's the same amount of time that the local dealership here said it would take. All I had was 2 jackstands and a floor jack. Do it your self, save $300 and learn a little bit about the car! Have fun!

Keep in mind though, have as little of gas in the tank as possible, it will make this job a lot safer and easier.

i've changed like 6 of them over the years (on other cars.. this will be the first replacement on this one..), but that's when I had access to a lift.. i no longer work at or have any friends working at places with lifts.. kinda sucks..and my garage is kinda at a angle.. the floor sunk so i don't like the idea of using jack stands in there anyways.. and my driveway isn't much better..

i got some quotes from 320 to 360 labor and parts from several places today for it.. i think i'm going to just get it done at a shop so i don't have to mess with it.. i don't have much time this week to work on it, and i still have to replace the pressure regulator.. the one i put on a couple days ago is only regulating at 30 psi...autozone parts suck..

Dan,

Regardless of how much extra cash it may cost, if you don't feel safe doing it in the garage or driveway, then the $300-400 is a bargain. Saving a couple hundred bucks only to get a crushed skull is not a good deal in my estimation. If the floor/driveway is not suitable for placing jack stands, then by all means DON'T do it.

You might be able to save a few bucks by getting your own pump. I would advise avoiding aftermarket pumps and go with an original AC pump, unless you need over 60 PSI at the rails for some reason. Most of the original pumps last for more than ten years and over 100,000 miles. That's fairly reliable. I have two of them with over 15 years and a am still waiting for one to let go. How many AutoZone "lifetime" pumps would I have installed in that time? Probably more than a Florida election board could count...
