Valve Seal Replacement
I plan on replacing my valve seals this weekend. I have a few questions before I start:
Is this the correct valve seal remover needed?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...K%3AMEBWA%3AIT
Also what is the safest method for keeping the valve from falling? Please advise. Could someone provide details on how to replace valve seals.
Thanks...

Sure but you do have all your fingers dont ya?
The popular method around here TGO is to run a length of rope down the spark plug hole and rotate the engine to compression to keep the valves from falling, I'm partial to compressed air.
Just remember when removingthe rockers to count the turns so you can retighten them the same number of turns. Saves a few minutes.

What type & diameter rope is recommended? Also do you happen to know the part# for the valve seals for a 88 305 TPI?

1/4inch nylon works great.

Do you stuff the rope in and then crank the motor? How do I verify that the piston is all the way up?

If you put enogh rope in, 3-4 ft, the piston will stop when jams the rope against the valves. Like ede said, turn the crank by hand.

Where should I purchase the valve seals? Is there a particular type needed? Also if someone could provide a part number that would definetly help. Tips on replacing the valve seals is also appreciated.
Thanks...

Part numbers are tricky. You might call a few machine shops and look for a complete gasket kit. I ordered a kit a few weeks ago came with head gaksets, valve guide seals (good ones) stem seals, intake gakets, water outlet gaskets including water pump gaskets and exhaust gaskets for $23.00. This was well worth it because giude seals alone at Azone were $18 which dident include stem seals or valve cover gaskets.

I plan on replacing the valve seals with the heads on the motor. Basically I would only need the valve seals and valve cover gasket. What would you recommend?

Longer91,
If the seals are totally shot it would dump oil down the guides all the time, that would decrease plug life, performance and would smoke constantly. If it is at that point its best to have the heads rebuilt completly.
IrockZon,
You will need at a bare minimum valve cover gaskets, intake guide seals, exhaust guide seals and valve stem seals (o-rings).
Its just somtimes cheaper to buy a whole kit like I did a couple weeks back.
