I have adjusted the air/fuel screws and the idle screws and nothing will get this thing to idle below 1400. it will idle at about 1200 if i give it a little gas to keep it going. Is this just how some larger cams idle?

not really, that cam will be lopey at idle (around 700 rpm in gear) but it shouldn't die or anything. check your timing. high idle usually means too much advance. is your engine running hot?
Well, i recently had that problem. First, make sure you have the idle adjustment screws set right. Also, make sure the floats are set rite. Then once that is in the right ballpark, adjust your timing. Have it around 12-14 intial if she has a big cam. Then, finish your carb. Also, check for vacumn leaks..
