T5 transmission fluid drain and refill procedure >

Whilst I was changing the oil in the RS, I checked out the rest of the undercarriage. (My uncle has a pit )

Anyway, I'm clearly losing ATF slowly from the tailshaft/driveshaft seal.

So sometime soon, I gotta change that seal, and refill the tranny.

As far as draining the fluid, I don't suppose removing the input shaft will drain it all, I know there is a fill plug, how about a drain plug?

And one more question, the haynes manual isn't clear, it says to lubricate the rubber lip of the seal with ATF, and use "sealant" on the outer seal lip.

I know on an auto tranny, you use grease on the front seal in order to stop it from burning up.

Will the ATF suffice on the tailshaft seal?

And what do they mean by "sealant" on the outer edge, silicone?

I'll write a tech article on this, it's a fairly common question, with few answers available. (I already searched it )

if i remember correctly there should be a drain plug in on the bottom of the trans. i think it's a square head pipe plug, it'd been a while since i saw a t5.

ede is right, there's a plug down low on the pass side.

You could lube the seal with anything. Motor oil, grease, ATF, spit... it doesn't matter, as long as there's something there to kepp it from burning up until some of the fill fluid gets back there.

That's what I was thinnking, I should have paid better attention when I was staring at that.

I gotta rust-proof the floorboards.

But anyway, I'm curious as to the sealant and lubrication of the seal.

just reread you post. you want sealer on the metal rim, the part that is a press fit aginst the case. atf on the rubber part.

Do yourself a favour and be careful with those bolts. Use the lower one to drain the fluid out then plug it up (DO NOT USE TEFLON TAPE or anything like that to seal it..you'll crack the case). I had to get mine welded after I cracked mine right around the thread. The best way to get the fluid in is to use and old fuel pump from the yard (that's what I use...or a washer pump would work great to). Worse to worse, a squeeze bottle will have to do. Let it drain well. (remove the drive shaft to get the last drops out the back). I like to replace the fluid from the inside of the car...it's much easier BUT, you have to know how much to put in before hand. (using the side bolt, you can fill until it starts to flow out of it..then you're done). Filling from the top is easier though, I've done it soo many times I can get the center console out in 5 min with my air ratchet.

Filling it up is a PIA. I usually take the shifter off and pour it in from the top. Next time though I'm making a little contraption that will fill it without me even getting my hands dirty.

What I'm going to do is get a schraeder valve from a bike tire and glue it onto a large bottle. Then I have a hose that runs to the bottom of the bottle with a 10 foot long piece of clear rubber hose. Then I simply hook up the electric bicycle pump and watch it pump the fluid right into the tranny

I did it the hardway also a few times....then I got smart. First time I filled my T-5 I ran a hose to the engine bay into the fill hose and kept pouring. Second time I took the hose up into the car. Third time I noticed something a little strange....there was ATF under the shifter....you can just take the shifter off and pour it down there with the top one plug out, as soon as it starts pouring out the top, you're full. No hoses, not air compressors, no problem

They make little plastic pumps that you just screw into the top of a lube bottle... like $5 at auto Zone... puts a quart of lube in there in about 30 seconds
