how long does oil last - Third Generation F-Body Message Boards

in september i went to college. i have been home a couple of times to start my camaro. right b 4 i left i changed the oil in it. now it is like 8 months later and i have only started the car like 4 times though it has never been driven. so i was wondering how bad is it to drive with oil that old? i really never drove it after i changned b 4 i stored it.

Think of it this way: how long did it spend where it was before it got put in the can? ummm.... 200 million years or something....

As long as it doesn't have condensation or rust in it, it lasts a very long time. I think you're in good shape. I would recommend though, that in the future you store it with the old oil in it, and change it when you start using it again; that way if it dies get condensation or any other contaminants in it while it sits up, you get rid of them.

the thing is that i am gonna change it when i put it back on the road. that is in about 4 weeks. but so it is ok to drive for like 200 miles with the oil that old?

Just another tip, but if you're going to start it up in the middle of storage, make sure you take it out for at least a 1/2 hour drive or so to get it fully warmed up. Starting it up and just letting it sit idling isn't going to get the oil to operating temperature, so any condesnation and other assorted funk that was in there isn't getting burnt off, simply mixed. I'd rather let my car sit dead for a few months then fire it up and leaving it cold.

Ed's right. I'm not much of an expert on these cars, but do have a little experience with other types of vehicles. Storing a vehicle is in many ways worse than driving it daily. RB was right with his suggestion as well.

To put it roughly, you kinda have to blow the cob webs out and then change your fluids. It would be a perfect time to due a tune up as well.
