Got a problem. Help!!

Just recently, my car was idleing rough and sorta popping when I applied acceleration. The problem turned out to be the timing.
The only problem is I can't adjust it how it's supposed to be. My marker tab is sidemounted under my power steering pump and when I set it a 8* on that marker it wants to shut off.
When I center the mark below the waterpump it idles, but is nowwhere near the timing marker.

I also adjusted my carb, properly(2 turns out) and now, it smokes while idleing BAD!What gives?? Could the timing be off enough to make the car smoke? or did I not adjust the carb right?

FYI Carb: 750 DP. and the smoke is blueish-white. Smells rich.
Like I' m burning raw fuel.
I am not losing water nor is my oil "milky" so headgasket is outruled. The car didn't smoke before until the adjustments.
Thanks DUECE.

If I were you, I'd do 3 things right now:

1. Put the timing back to where it was when the car ran right, tighten the bolt, and ignore the mark; and

2. Change the primary power valve; and

3. Find out what's really wrong with it.... and I'll give you one quick clue, it isn't the ignition timing.

Just out of curioisity, how did the timing just up and jump so far out into the ozone, all of a sudden and all by itself, that it could make the car spit back through the carb enough to blow out the power valve?

Instinct tells me that once you get over the newbie yank-on-the-distributor urge and get settled down to some serious trouleshooting, you'l find either a rolled exhaust lobe or a blown head gasket.

Calm yourself, first off...newbie?? to the board YES, to motors..NO.
The problem turned out to be a blown power valve, once it's replaced I can then set the adjustments to the carb and go from there. Damn,... hot rods, you can't live w/ them and you shouldn't live w/o them.DUECE

Glad you got it fixed.... and of course, it wasn't the timing.
