Speedometer needle jumps radically after lube

before I lubed the cable it would whine noticably and it was not quite steady. Now, sometimes it jumps wildly and at other times it is rock steady but it is quiet though. I used graphite speedometer lube and put it in at the top (behind the guage cluster).
