Most people will take a paper cup of water, and rev the engine to about 2k-2500. Pour the water in just fast enough that the rpms drop about 500, and you are fine. Just dont stick the garden hose in the carb.
You will see black stuff start coming out the exhaust, you will see it, it will definately be noticable. Keep doing it as long as you want really, as long as you dont pour too much in at once. Practically, I would say do it until the amount of black coming out decreases. Maybe not necesarrily stops, but decreases a lot.
