I know a kid about 15 miles away from me that has a camaro sittin in the weeds with only surface rust (the hood is off of it), that he is trying to sell for about 2-300 bucks. right now there is no engine or trans, + i'm sure it needs other little odds and ends. I went to see it today and i think i wrote the vin down wrong but the parts i got right that i put in the vin decoder said it was a 89 with a v6 (not sure how much i trust this though because i think he bought the car in the first place for the engine and trans). I have a buddy that said if i help him drop a 455 into his olds hurst, then i can have the 350 we take out for real cheap. and he said he also has a trans that i could have cheap. so do you guys think its worth it?? i mean i found a 92' 25th anni with a 355 and some other stuff with it overal looking pretty good for around 3500.. but i don't know anything about a 355 and if i could build up the 200 dollar car with a 350 and it would be faster than the 355 for around the same price, i'd just go that route.. so what would you do? get the 200 dollar car, build it how i want it, or buy a premade car and try to figure out what someone else has already done? thanks -Bob

If the 350 coming out of the olds (probably a Hurst Olds actually) is an olds engine, its not something you would want. Also, look at the k member, and see how the mounts are bolted on. If they are on the back set of holes, then it is a v6 car, and you will have some work cut out for you converting it to a V8. IMO it wasnt that hard, but some people have a hell of a time.

Make sure to check the underside of the car, real good. Make sure you arent ending up with a POS.

If your looking to learn all about cars then sounds like you found yourself a project car. I myself think that starting from scratch is a great way to get to know your car inside and out. If you have a mechanical/electrical aptitude, like getting dirty, have lots of free time and a reasonable source for money to finance the project, GO FOR IT. Be ready for all the challenges, but by no means will it be impossible. You will find no better pleasure than taking that car from junk to jazzy. Hope you get it. how can i tell if the 350 is a olds 350 or a chevy 350? cause my friend has another 350 that is already out (not sure what its out of), but this one that is still in the car was just rebuilt a little bit ago...

Get the serial numbers off block and heads, that will tell you what you have. I myself can't help you with what the differences are, my guess is mounting brackets and stuff like that will be different because the motor is designed for a different car?? Can it be converted to fit, probably but again, one more thing to give you grief. Try to minimize your challenges by sticking with blocks/ engines and tranny's designed for the Camaro.

Fuel pump, heads, intake, motor mounts, valve covers, basically anything that bolts to the engine. Not to mention that headers to fit are going to be expensive.

hmm.. i think this might be a a bit more than i'm ready for.

now i just gotta decide between a 25th anni with a 355 for 3500, or a mechanic i know has a 85 iroc with a 305 that's about perfect just needs new door hinge (sagging) and a slight overheating issue.. that he'll give me for 3200.

also i just read that the 85 iroc has the lb9 which is the most powerful 305 ever offered.

I thought that the tuned port was the strongest 305? I dont
think they had TPI in 85.

well upon further reading it isn't the strongest, i just now noticed that the C&D article was from 1984 ..

but it does have tpi, it was the top engine choice for the 85 iroc..

The 85 wasn't the fastest STOCK 305 TPI, but it didn't have the peanut cam either. I think the 305 5 spds w/ dual cats were the quickest (I think they were the SD setups)
