still wont start

it all started when i found the timing was off, during the process of trying to get a tool to fit on the distributor bolt my battery died (left the dome light on for a full day) i charged the battery still doesnt start, took battery to a parts shop tested it and they said its good, took alternator to parts shop tested it they said its fine what could be the problem now? the car ran fine when i bought it about 3 weeks ago, so now the battery and alt are good and it turns over just fine, not slow or any weird sounds just wont catch, only thing i can think of is timing because i now have no idea what degree its at i tried turning it a little bit at a time then trying to start it still nothing. so what could i check now to save from having to be towed to a shop and spending lots of money? any help or ideas would be great thx.

If it turns over, its not the battery, or alternator. You need to readjust your timing. Is it sputtering at all? You didnt fully remove the distributor did you? If you did, you probably have it too far off to start. Position the distributor so that it is strait, (1&8 perfectly in front) and try starting it, after snugging the bolt down.

i didnt remove the distributor just loosened the bolt and when i did it shifted a little bit, and sometimes depending where the distributor was when i turned it it would sputter and even run for a sec or two but if i gave it any gas at all it would die instantly

well i couldnt get it to run so i had it towed to the shop and there telling me that i need a fuel pump now ( for $600!!! ) and that the fuel filter is original can anyone tell me what some signs of a bad pump would be? the last time i was able to drive the car if i tried to floor it, it would kinda make a poping sound like a backfire and the RPM gauge would rev up but i wouldnt go anywhere and i felt like it was going to die, is that a sign of a bad pump? or could the fuel filter just be clogged because it orignal and i was low on gas?

if they say they will replace your fuel pump for 600 dollars.... do it yourself man lol... the pump itself is less than 100. The fuel filter is less than 20. Try not to let the shops **** rape you if you can help it

A bad fuel pump could cause your problems as well.... as for the fuel filter.... do that yourself, pleeeeease dont let the shop convince you it's out of your league, it's less than 20 and they'll probably charge you parts + half an hour or more of labor to change it out.

Did they tell you what your fuel pressure was? I would change the fuel filter first, see what happens. Pretty hard to say fuel pump until you do that first. After you replace the filter, see what the FP is at the rail. If it is low then you are probably looking at dropping the tank and replacing the fuel pump. BTW, did they check the FP relay?? That can give you problems with fuel delivery.

i did have them replace the filter first to see if that fixed the problem cause it was the original filter they told me but said it didnt help and the pressure was still too low so i decided to have them replace the pump for about $350 kinda expensive but it fixed the problem and i didnt have the space to do myself cause i live in an apartment. the timing on the other hand i checked when i got home was so far retarted that i almost couldnt see the line on the balancer lol and i had to drive it home like that, talk about poor performance, but problem solved and thanks for the responces and input
