I have a 305 tpi,the worse version because its the 86er with the junk cam in it,what the hell was GM thinking?,anyways i am wondering since alot of people on the boards seem to think 305s are junk, who is the fastest 305 owner that will shut up alot of 350s?,what is your horsepower and quarter times?
I think all 305's Autos got the peanut cam not only the 86. Th e85 is the only exception but all the other years 86-89 all 305's auto's are rated at 190hp.
I probably don't have the fastests 305 out there but I've done very well at the track with it. Well enough that there have been quite a few people not believe me when I tell them its a 305. I've managed to get my LG4 with the stock bottom end down to a 13.4 at 101mph with no power adders. I really think I could get another .2 out of it with good track conditions. Willie has the fastest 305 that I know of but he has a supercharger, I think he is in the low 12's?

On this board, I think Willie has one of the fastest. He is either now breaking into (or about to) get into the 11s. I think ODB has times in the high 10s if IIRC; but I cannot recall if that was with his 305 or 383.
preston smith ran 9s with his old vortech blown 305 TPI (w/ stock intake too.) He switched to a single turbo set up that should annhilate the vortech times...

Jeez, the fastest I ever went was a 13.99 at 102 mph. That was the only time I ever broke into the 13's with that car (by a hair!) Then the motor started going south...the tires wore out, the posi didn't lock, etc...
I am glad to hear that these 305s can be made fast,i read about one doing 13s in gm high tech and it was supercharged,i am still stunned that someone got into the 9s,so i guess on the board Willie is the fastest so far,i hope he sees this topic so he can tell us his times, jbenge, your times of 13.4 are definately respectable, that means your car can run along stock lt1 camaros all day, very nice.
Stunned?? Man..I just read about a CRX that does 8.50's. There are plenty of mid 9 second DSM' with a 2.0 motor..a 5.0 with a big blower or a huge turbo can easily hit 9's.
I am not stunned at a ***** doing that, the car might have half the motor but it also has half the weight too,i just think that people underate the 305 motors ALOT,i was just suprised to see that someone on the board got it into the 9s,most cars i read or hear about are 12s and 13s.

My buddies 89 5.0 5M G92 car did the same thing. As soon as he hit 14.0 the car started breaking. We took the oilpan down to change the seals and found 2 piston skirts laying in it. He put it back together anyways and is still driving it 2 years later.
He threw a ring gear tooth from the 9-bolt using Drag Radials and launching at 4000.
The car was all stock internally.
See ya's.

i dont wanna speak too soon, but i think with his new ATI, D1SC S/C he hit 12.2 on his first run..and is hoping to break into 11's with some tuning. It's quite a beast('87 305 auto)

83 Z28-- not a pretty site to look at, 200k miles and im sure it was treated like a rental car every day of its sad life(before i got it).. sold, thank the lord
74 Z28-- 383/400, green on black. pretty clean. FOR SALE!!!
It looks like you guys are having fun on this thread and thought I would join in. I've had numerous combinations of power adders, etc. on my car so I'll try to be brief with each one.
Naturally Aspirated
14.07 @ ? (Can't remember the mph)
While many others are signficantly faster than I am, I attribute my slowness to the fact that my engine was built with a supercharger in mind.

Diddo! all the cams were about the same the difference in hp was made with the less dished pistons HO modles and FI also gave the hp rating a little boost.
now lets see 82 lg4 very low output with 200c. stock run "in hight altitude 3900ft+" 16.9 at 88mph
with comp 250H cam and no cat or emissions equiptment non cc qjetcarb/distributor 15.3 92mph. not too bad considering there BB's runing 12's/14's NA of course.
Damn willie, your definately an inspiration to us 305 guys, thats crazy that your still emissions legal too. i think that i might give my 305 a chance at life instead of being thrown away for a 12 pack, lol,i had a 350 in mind for her this winter but perhaps i can build my 305 into an animal and when i am asked if its a 350 i will reply, nope just a 305,lol,i think that would be cool.how much are we talking willie to get a 305 tpi to where yours is?,keep in mind that mine is an 86 if that matters, where should i start?, i need some of willies 305 build up 101.

My plan was to stick with a 305 even though it would have been more cost effective to go with a 350. But I had a point to prove. I'm so glad I stuck with it. So far, my track kills include a 1998 LS1 Z28 convertible, a 1998 Corvette and a 2000 Camaro SS. I have yet to lose to any generation Mustang. All with my technologically outdated, displacement challenged IROC-Z. Can you say "SWEET"???

I couldn't have said it better myself. The only "problem" is that the other boys at the track tend not to believe me when I tell them my engine is a 305. (In all reality, it is bored over 0.020, so it's actually almost a 308.)

I never kept track of the $$$ I spent in the last three years. Suffice it to say I've spent many times over what I paid for the car. It's called a labor of love (or speed, if you will).

It doesn't matter. The only difference is that yours came with a hydraulic cam and mine was a hydraulic roller. You can always change yours to roller.
Go to http://willie.camaro-firebird.org and click on "Mods and E/T's". It shows you the progression of my mods and resulting track times. It's not current, but you'll get the idea.

I'd be glad to send you my list of mods. It's rather long, but very concise. Just e-mail me.

I am e-mailing you asap,i just really think having a 305 whooping a$$ is cool, most people dont care but i think having the OE block is something to take pride in.I was going to go with a TTA or GN motor as i think that would be cool as they should have made a turbo iroc, they made the iroc alot of show and no go compared to some cars like the GN that were sleepers.
Willie & Phil & I are going out to SIR, in Tucson, on June 29th to try out our "new mods" - we've also come to the conclusion that we will never be finished modifying our rides.........anyone else want to join us????
Your car was a 305 5-speed? What did u do to get it there? How much did the free mods help? What were u lanching at and what were ur shift points? Derrick
Thats awesome thta your car is in the 12s,sweet,it makes me really want to build my 305,i think it would be funny to smoke a 4th gen ls1 and say i only have a 305,lol, that would be cool,i plan to build my car this winter as long as funds are right,i have my choices to a 305,350,and the 3.8 with a turbo,i know the 350 is the cheapest route i believe, but saying you have a 305 or a 6 in it would be funny.
If it aint a V-8 that $hit aint fast!,unless its a GN,lol!

Derrick,
Tim is the original owner of his '92 Z28. It is a 305, 5-speed car. If you'd like a list of his mods, e-mail him. He launches at 5,500 rpm and shifts around 6,000 - 6,200. Hope this helps.
Tim and I are good friends and work at the same company. It's kind of ironic that the two fastest (debatable) 305's are here in Tucson and that we did not know each other three years ago.

Never got to a 1/4 mile dragstrip, but I had :-( a good 12 secong combo and spent around $1,000. My car is an 1986 Iroc. Stock it went a blazing 10.6 in the 1/8. Then came N20. It went to a 9.2(after tuning) in the 1/8. After I got tired of being slow I put in a compucam hydryalic cam 440/454'' and some Edelbrock coated headers(used for $200.00) and the car went 8.02 @ 88mph in the 1/88 which is deep in the 12's. and 9.0 @78 without the N20. Oh yea the only other things I did were 22-2400 stall when the tranny wennt out and no cat. I suggest this combo to everyone. Any questsions just ask.

Thanks for the info willie. Love the car...even if it didn't do low 12's high 11's-thats just icing on the cake. I'll def. consult him for help. thanks again Derrick
I am definately considering it,i just really want to make sure its the best choice,i really think the v-6 turbos have alot of potential,i will have my mind up this winter when i have the funds.
