Is this ok????

I finally got a timing chain that works on my new engine today, but there were a few difficulties. I had to grind the cam retainer plate bolts and the back of the cam gear slightly to prevent some friction spots. Also the new chain is so tight that when I tried to install it I had to push the cam back in the block so that the chain was completely verticle when I installed it, and then have it pull back out when I tightened the bolts. The chain has a very slight amount of play/slack in it now that it's installed, and it doesn't bind at all when I rotate the engine. Is this all ok??

Sounds like a normal tight good timing chain. Not sure about your machining. Just make sure that the gears ARE ABSOLUTELY LINED UP!!!

What brand and type of chain is it and why did you have a problem with another chain?

Paul,

Tight is good. I've had a few that have required some coaxing and convincing to get in place, and have not had them fail.

I'm still a little confused about the retainer plate, however. There are only two flavors of cam plates, and one of them should have worked on your case with your cam without the modifications. Regardless, as long as the cam is secured, the cam sprocket clears on the back side, and the timing assembly is lined up, everything should be O.K.

You're getting closer now...

Vader....I've said it before and I'll say it again. You listen to some kick *** music!!! I can always tell exactly what songs your quotes are from.
As far as the cam plates, neither one worked without some type of mods. I used the timing set out of the GMPP catalog that comes with both plates and the gears and chain. I only took off about 1/16 to 1/8 inch on the back of the cam gear. Do I have to worry about it breaking at all??
