I just recently put on the open breater (best 30 bucks i've ever spent) and i havent put on an after market crankcase breather...my question is what is the purpose of this part? Is it majorly important or is it just something thats there and should really not be given a second glance. The crankcase breather can be mostly forgotten about... The pcv should be replaced semi-regularly though.

Check the breather filter. If it's black, dirty, oil stained, etc., go ahead and replace it with a new one. It's only a few bucks. And while you're at it, you might as well get an aftermarket one.

I pitched my PCV valve in favor of a second breather.

To answer your question, it's function is to remove the positive pressure that can build up in your crankcase as a result of blowby. Without it, you'd have positive pressure in the crank case, which can cause all sorts of leaks in valve cover gaskets, oil pan gaskets, etc.
