entire car jolts on shift

87 camaro, got the stock automatic transmission. when i shift from park into reverse or drive the car jolts pretty hard... scares me a little bit. i dunno if this is typical of these cars? what do u think? is there something i shuold look into?

yah probably the idle.. been messing with that lately.... (iac/vacuum) about what should i be idleing at in park?

appreciate the response.. good to see at least my problems are piecing together!
