Please help me, I can't figure out what this is!

There is a black can like object mounted above my master cylinder. It has two vacum lines coming out of it... and what I really need to know is where they are supposed to go. One of them got melted, so I am replacing it. I need to figure this out so I can put my new engine in. Thanks

Johny,

What year and engine type do you have? What you are describing sounds like a vacuum canister (used to hold vacuum for accessories when the engine is under heavy load and producing little vacuum). If one of the lines is melted off, trace it to the opposite end and replace it. If it is a vacuum reservoir, one of the lines should go to the intake or a carburetor port, and the other should go to the HVAC controls in the passenger compartment.
