882 cast number heads??
I have a set of 882 heads fixed up with larger valves etc. is it possible to make these floww as good as vortecs?? THANKS

Also has any one used longer push rods 4 more lift if so how do u caculate lift right now mines 480@50'' and say Ichange the stock ones out 4 .100'' longer would this help performance????

882 castings make good boat anchors. There are much better factory castings to pick from.
Push rod length has nothing to do with the amount of lift. Proper pushrod length is required to keep the proper valve train geometry. A proper length keeps the tip of the rocker on top of the valve and doesn't create side loads on the valve stem.

Yes they can be made to flow as good as vortec's. But their major downfall this their huge 76cc chambers. So your compression will be crap, low 8's.

he could always have them deck milled but thats expensive, or put in high dome top pistons. They flow better than the L98 heads aluminum or cast.

Well i was gonna add they have good compression for a larger engine. But a larger engine needs as much head flow as possible. And 882's aren't really gonna make much power in a 400.
About the max on a reasonable build that these heads can support is about 350hp

Well yes but notice how i said reasonably. Thats in a fully race setup with huge compression, huge cam, and everything optimized.
The heads flow enough to make 420hp, but the motor will not be streetable. It is much better to have heads that flow better so the setup can be milder.
I know they are decent heads, David Vizard loves them. People just hear crap and just keep passing it on. People also think that the old "fuelie" heads are the ****, because back in the day they were, but now they are just that ****.
With that being said i still wouldn't run them without fully porting them.

882's worked pretty decent on my 383. i got 401hp(crank) with a mild 480 lift cam, and just a slight intake port match.
Not everything these guys say is the gods honest truth. try them out and decide for yourself they take standard valvetrain components. so if you don't like them, it's an afternoon of your time to swap them out after you buy something else to your liking.

882's really aren't bad heads, in stock form they will make 420 horse via flow testing and calculators, so 400 to be safe. They have a small port, which would also raise velocity. You may recieve alot of torque from these heads. If you want more streetable power port them out. If that calculation above shows stang compression on your engine that will work fine. Try them out, if they dont work , they dont work.

I don't have an opinion on this, but perhaps others might share theirs. looking at these flow numbers, the stock 882s keep up with vortecs on the exhaust side up to .4 lift. 406iroc says his heads already have larger valves. Would he be close to Vortecs already under.5 inch lift?

Flow isn't the problem. Any head can be ported to flow a lot more air. The problem with the 882 casting is that it's thin and weak. Most of the time it will have an internal crack that can't be detected easily. Just because the 882 castings can be found on factory 400's doesn't mean they're better. The 400's were never made as high HP engines.
