What does freon smell like?

I finally discharged my A/C system yesterday and it didn't have anything in it. It only made the "psst" sound for 2 seconds, lol. Didn't smell anything at all. I took off the drier and some of the hoses. Still no smell. Come back to the car after going get some tools and there's a strong smell. My brother thought it was freon because he used to work with that stuff but we traced it to my dad's shop. It was the smell of burnt metal, cause he makes custom 4-wheeler racks. I'm just curious if there's anything else common that freon might smell like. Thanks.

please do not attempt to smell freon, especially the 134a. read the side of the can it states "can cause sudden death". another thing it increases the risk of testicular cancer. 134a was made safer for the enviroment but worse for us than it's r-12 counterpart.
