Coincidentally some of the guys at work today were discussing visual differences on older 305 vs 350. They said the dipsticks were on different sides and that the balancer was different too. Don't hold me to it, I'm not the one who said it. It's just something I heard. Anybody?

I think I see the dipstick on the drivers side of the block... all that means is the block is pre 1980... it still could be a 305 or 350 but why would someone want to swap in a pre 1980 305??? so actually it could be anything from a 262 to a 400 from that angle..... wanna find out exactly what it is??? pull it out and start measuring bore and stroke...

the only way to tell the size of any small block is to check the numbers on teh block. externally they are all teh same with the exception of the 400. there is a number pad on the back of the block right next to the bellhousing, the other number and the only one you will be able to see is the one on the passenger side deck surface. it is right by the water pump just in front of the head. this number will tell you if it is the original motor or not. the number on the back of the motor will tell you what the motor actually is.
