sender should show a resistance value based on the temp it is reading, I forget what ohm-age represents what temp, but that's one thing to check (make sure the sender is outputting correctly). Then you probably have an open circuit between the head and your cluster. You can try removing your cluster, and checking the wiring, see if something is dirty/corroded, or broken.
k the said thing is that i am in college to be a electrical tech and i don't have a dmm so i am buying one on e-bay right now

ha-ha!
why not grab one from your local parts store for $12? At my company (circuit boards) we use continuity and voltage basically. Every now and then, resistance. No other fancy shmancy features.
well i got my dmm from e-bay and i have 69 ohms with the wire disconnected from the wire to ground

ignition off if it where on there should be voltage and that would throw the reading

Yes, that is what I am asking. With the connector disconnected from the sensor and the ignition turned ON, what is the voltage at the connector (not the sensor)?

the gadge its self could aslo be bad (mine was) if your gadges are anything like my 83's all you have to do is grab a jyard gadge (make sure the needle is good, sorta hard to explain how to tell if the spring is good, if your needle in your car is past 260 degrees and doesnt go down, then the spring is bad) If you can get a PNP one it will be 10X cheaper.
