Vortec or Regular Iron heads

I was thinking about going with the vortec style heads on my new 383 build. Everything i want out of the engine is on a link at the bottom of this post. But i was wondering what people thought about these heads, If i took these heads and put in 2.02 and 1.60 valves and 3 angle valve job and a port and polish, how much more power would i be gettin out of the vortecs of the old iron heads with the same work done to them? What im askin is if the vortecs would be better to start with and would i notice better power and more low end torque. Thanks in advance

vortec head

i keep hearing that for the money you cant beat them, a local speed shop keeps them in supply. and they claim the really flow better then some after market heads. my dad just built a 383 and were going to put vortec heads on it, i like the aluminium heads you can gereraly run my compression with no problems with 91 fuel.

don't touch the heads, no port and polish either. bigger valves really don't add flow for them. honestly unless the porter really knows what he is doing, they will hurt flow besides a basic bowl blend. last i checked at fast times porting they wanted $1300 to port up a set of heads for a circle track car I sometimes run. the beauty of these heads is you just get the guides cut down, the spring pockets opened up and screw-in studs installed and they will make 400 hp no problem

heads

So what your sayin is, that these heads would be a good choice for my build but they really dont need ported or anything. I think i will put the bigger vavles because i have them layin around the garage. But these heads would or wouldnt be a good choice? What would be better?

i think he is saying that it might hurt flow with the bigger valves.

Ive heard this too. I heard vortecs can benefit from bigger exhaust valves though.

have them bowl blended if you really want them touched by someone, otherwise have the guides cut for more lift, spring pockets enlarged for whatever springs you'll be using and the scre-in rocker studs installed. that is more than enough for a low 12 second motor, then just pop in a XE274 cam or similar and make 400+hp all day long.

I definately think the Vortecs are the best head for the money. Like has already been said, leave the porting and valves alone. The only modification they need are for increased lift.

I have a 355 with AFR heads and a 383 with Vortecs and although the 355 is faster I also have a lot more money/time in it. The 383 is much more street friendly and really not much slower.

If you do get the Vortecs make sure you have someone with a camara take a photo of your huge grin the first time you floor it because it will definately be a Kodak moment.

If you click here you'll learn more about the Vortec heads than you thought you'd ever want to know.

There's a guy, who's name is Dirt (no pun LOL), who seems to be absolutely infatuated with Vortec heads. He's had plenty of success using them and could probably tell you things he's done with them you didn't want to know about.

Another great, cheap head to consider is the special Aerohead Racing has going on right now. Dart 165cc Iron Eagles. CHP did a test of "Heads under $1,000" on a 383 with an Xtreme Energy 274XE cam and those heads did very well. Better than the Vortec heads in average HP and average torque.

Click here for the special. $625 is about the same price "upgraded" Vortecs go for.
