1984 camaro, 305 5.0L
I bought the car with a scrap angine so I replaced it with a 305 from a 1980
cutlass.
battery is full, vacuum hoses are all right.
all grounds are good.
engine very hard to turn, takes about 6 attempts to get it started with it spitting gas out from the carb after each try. Sometimes it will actually start
but idle verry badly and heat super fast.
could this be because I put the distributor in backwards and it is firing on the compression stroke instead of the firing stroke.

Ok, So I was wrong. I had it right the first time. Although I think I may have found something.
When I have the three whire connector from the base of the distributor pluged in, I have that trouble with the engine not wanting to crank smoothley as if the battery is almost dead. But when I unplug that three whire connector the engine cranks like a champ but wont start at all.
Could this be that the ecm controlled timing module on the base of the distributor has crapped out or am I on the wrong track ?

I posted a question yesterday stating that I thought I had my distributor installed backwards.
Here is the breakdown.
Bought a 1984 Camaro with a scrap v8 in it.
Pulled the engine and placed a 305 from a 1980 cultass.
When I try to start it, It has a really hard time cranking ( as if the battery is half dead) and when I am luck enough to get it to start after about six attempts, it idles really iradically and heats super fast.
Battery is fully charged, all vacuum hoses are good and placed right, all grounds are good.
Now what I find strange is when I unplug the three whire connector from the base of the distributor, the engine cranks great but wont start. When I plug it back in. I have this mind boggling problem.
Could it be that the timing controll module on the base of the distributor has crapped out or am I on the wrong track all together.

By unpluging your ignition you naturally create more available current for the starter to use, so yes it would sound better. However, the starter is not a factor. how old is your dizzy anyways?
Everything your describing sounds like its advanced too much!
Too much advance on base timing will give the starter a hard time because its firing way to early and the crank is trying to spin backwards and the starter is trying to spin it the other way. Catch my drift?
Turn the dizzy clockwise about 1/16-1/8 of a turn clockwise and give it a shot.
