That's right at the edge of the max lift stock unmodified heads will handle.

But, you need new valve springs (and new retainers to eliminate those factory rotators highly recommended) regardless.

That would be a good cam, but would need full exhaust (headers, 3" to the muffler) and probably more stall than stock (if automatic).

Do you plan on having the heads off for any reason?

Re: Biggest cam in 305?

Well, thing is, i had been searching for a 350 for about a year now, since i baught my camaro (engineless) and my friend had one for sale. So i baught it from him, not long after installing it in my car (which used to have a v6) i took off the heads cause i wanted to polish them, i seen the vin on the heads so i thought id check if they were any good, it turns out they are god dang 305 heads, so i still tried to keep my hopes up and took the engine vin and checked it out. Of course with my luch its a 305, but poor idiot who sold it too my thinks he has a 350 in his camaro lol, i checked his engine code out turns out its an LG3, even crapyer than mine, and plus he gave edelbrock intake manifold and accel supercoil. Now i still want a 350 in my car but the engine is already in and i am 100% sure he won't give me back my money. For now i have TH350 tranny and this lg4 305 out of an 81 camaro. What ever i put in this engine i want to be able to take out and put in my 350 that i hopefully will buy and rebuild within the next 2 years, but for now too much money had been thrown on to my camaro and the 305 has to stay. And yes i do plan on putting headers, but i ain't sure if they will be duellies all the way back and it will be 3" exhaust all around. I didn't plan on taking the heads off but if i have to i will, it still needs a cam, the one inside right now is rough, and i know some people don't like ebay and what not but, id like to get the 300$ kit where you get pretty much everything. check it out --> http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/COMP-...QQcmdZViewItem

Any way please give me your opinion, iv followed your advice before and you always seem to have good points

Man I hear what you are saying, but I have had some hard times getting the right parts or getting good quality parts for something like this. Before you buy this part, make sure that you contact the seller and ask, in the event that parts are not as described or of poor quality, to they pay return shipment for the item and will they fully refund your money.
Also read the sellers negative feedbacks and neutral feedbacks. They hold secrets and can give you an insight into who you are dealing with.
Just my 2 cents, don't fall into the same traps I did.

Nothing wrong with that kit - except it's the High Energy single-pattern cam, not the Xtreme Energy you first said.

It's the eBay knock-offs that I recommend against. He's selling a genuine Comp kit, not a knock-off. The seller also has a very good feedback for the huge score he has - the most recent negative feedback was unjustified, and the neutral over a teeshirt - petty.

You said you checked the "VIN" - did you mean casting number? Get the casting number off of the block, that will tell you whether it's a 305 or 350. Putting 305 heads on a 350 is very common, and if they are the 416 heads, as you said, they are the good ones and will easily support a 350.

no, i got the casting number of the block and looked it up, its a 1981 f body 305 that pushes about 155hp, and the code says DHZ, the heads are 416's as you said

Re: Biggest cam in 305?

ok i think i am going to go a bit smaller some people have had me say i may have problems with such a big cam and stock torq converter. WOuld the XE262 be any good, i looked close and seen the difference between the HE and XE, but just wondering why is exactly the XE better? and just a quick question. In a 305 H.O., apart from the dual snorkel air breather, and cam is their any other difference's? I mean is their even any difference in the heads? Right now i have 416's. I can get a set of 305 H.0. heads pretty cheap thats why i am asking this. And for comparison, the 262 cam would be much bigger than H.O. cam aye? I plan on putting 2 1/2" exhaust from headers to a y pipe than 3" all the way back. i also have edelbrock intake, Edelbrock air cleaner bowl with edelbrock filter, accel supercoil and also plan on putting headers. This all should at least push a good 220hp i hope? What do you guys think? (LG4 305 and th350)

Re: Biggest cam in 305?

You and I are looking to do the same thing, pick a good cam for our 305. I'm looking for a cam that will improve the performance but still have good street manners. I'll be watching your thread for recommendations.

Check the FAQ forum for the thread about differences between 305's. Also gives performance tips.

The XE series is "dual pattern", meaning it has a different lobe shape for intake and exhaust valves. There are other subtle differences, but the XE will basically give you better performance at lower RPMs without sacrificing anything at the top end.

The XE262 would be fine, although typically the XE258 is considered the largest cam to use with stock stall. Torque converters for TH350's are pretty inexpensive, I wouldn't give up a big chunk of performance for a small chunk of change.

Sorry for the high jack, but I just spent time with Compcams and found that the XE-262-4 would be the best to go with. I have a standard tranny. It says some machining has to be done?????????

Re: Biggest cam in 305?

Get some new heads for it too, I got dart aluminum heads and a big cam in my 305 i had and that thing really roared, along with edelbrock tes headers, and catback and 2800 stall and a few other things, anyways that car was FAST 305's can be made quick fairly easily it easily smoked 350s

Re: Biggest cam in 305?

i'd say since you're planning a 350 later, to leave the aftermarket heads for later when you build your larger engine. use the 416's, that's what i'm using...real ET's in sig...

sure, but it would also add another $1000 to his cam swap that he doesn't necessarily need to do to get the car running well

Re: Biggest cam in 305?

no,no,no! not 1000$ extra lol. I don't plan on spending more than 700$ for internal engine parts. I already have my intake and air breather, and supercoil. That leaves the cam kit, which is going to cost me close to 400$ and i want headers, i can get a set of hedman long tubes for about 150$ used. That leaves me 150$ to buy extra's. I don't know what to spend that on, i was reading the instalation instructions of the cam i want to put in , they recomend to change the pushrods, i don't know if this would be a good investment. What else could i buy, i really don't want to put much in the heads, cause as you guys said i would late on like to convert to 350, but i ain't sure yet about that. IF it can kill all the rice burners in my towns asses il be plenty happy! . Would a shift kit be a better investment than the pushrods, or what do you guys think?
Don't mention the exhaust, its on a seperate bill, and i plan on doing it mostly my self anyways so i shouldn't cost me more than 200$ anyways sooo.

Re: Biggest cam in 305?

I have the comp XE268 in my 305 camaro with a 3000 stall. Works fine and it is streetable, i use to DD the car. When i first put the motor togeather i had trans problems, and a i bought a th350 from someone local but it was a lockup th350 so i couldent use my stall. With the stock stall that cam was horible. Would bog off the line then roast the tires after it got into the powerband.

I pulled the trigger and bought the CompCam XE262 and the full kit with it, springs, timing chain, retainers, seals, lifters, etc. The rep at Comp Cam said this is an easy install with no machining required. Their website is very helpful.
