royal purple users be careful

ok so always used royal purple without any issue mafe the switch quite some years ago and its never let me down...until now, was great to me, last change on the camaro about 1100 miles while checking it over i noticed it was real thin, smelled horrible and looked like it had been in there for 9k miles so i thought huh, dumped it and put more in with the filter and have watched it EXTREMELY closely well here i am 900 miles, bad burnt smell and looked nastier than the **** i pull out of the diesel,(this cars oil at 3k has always looked great up till the last 2 changes) had also noticed some valve train noise not normal for this car, so i took it to work after the emssions test and bought a case of quaker state(old mans ran forever in everything and my moms blazer has 185K and never so much as had the manifold off) so i start it up to leave and the valve train doesnt sound good at all, to the point i was debating driving it home, but was gonna have to wait a few hours to get it in on a lift(live 3 miles away) so it somewhat clears up, i baby her home and dump the oil, came out thin as hell, literally was like water, it was hot but still never seen it run out like that in all my years, did the change with my good ole fram ph5 and quaker and she started real quiet no noise when its hot nothing and for what i paid for 1 bottle of royal purple i can get 3 quarts of quaker my buddy tony had the same problems infact we think thats what caused his 496 to start tearing up bearing i'm not messin with it anymore i got almost 9k into this motor....not gonna risk it, be careful guys be real careful i dont know if i got a few bad batches or what but i've now switched back to regular old quaker state

Re: royal purple users be careful

I switched to the purp on my tired old 180K lo3 recently and the change was amazing.

It runs much smoother and easier now and the smoke from the valve seals at startup is maybe 1/4 of what it used to be.

It also runs a lot cooler and takes a lot longer to warm up to 220ish to where the fan comes on, and the temp drops quicker and lower that it ever did before when I start to drive for longer periods.

The oil pressure gage doesn't wobble around at idle anymore, either.

I decided to switch after using that gunky Lucas crap and the oil pressure nearly maxed out. I read a few threads about it here, which convinced me to drain it all and try a synthetic.

I'm not sure what happened to your oil, but you should have it tested to find out. RP has a good rep that I'm sure is well deserved. If they were no good, most car guys would know about it like we do about the Teflon additives and now that Lucas gunk.

thats exactly what i experianced a few years back when i switched, its been good to me but the last few and my other buddies experiance have sucked...i'm not trying to sway people but i did want to put it out there, hey i got a problem here, make sure yours is alright i'm sure most of us check our oil religiously but some dont and assume its good, and if you've ever worked in a shop you have seen 15k miles i didnt know i had to change oil jobs kinda thing, i am anal about my fluids especailly oil and i'm just not happy with what i'm seeing with it right now

Re: royal purple users be careful

I use royal purple 10W40 and it does what oil is supposed to do. Before you condem royal purple you might want to see how the quakerstate is doing in 1000 miles. I think something caused the oil to get this way rather than saying the oil was defective.

Send a sample for analysis. That's the only way to know what's going on. Fresh and used would be best, do you have any of either left?
